Be an effective Ally – Equality for minorities

Some of you know me on Facebook and see me post longer missives when I am trapped in my head and need to say something. Usually, when I need to make clear something that I cannot voice easily for fear of interruption before the message is complete, or because verbalizing an idea that has so much effect and depth can be very difficult and dangerous.

These two posts are something I feel very strongly about. I would say I feel strongly enough that they need repeated attention. Read then take a day or a few and re-read. Look critically at not……

2016 goes and 2017 arrives

Why is this still on my mind? I just, sort of, kind of pulled myself out of the new year funk that leaves me wanting to curl up with pets, a scotch and a movie that will make me cry.

We are into March, and I am still thinking of transition.

First off – lets have a short review… Last year I wanted to do a few things

be on a podcast – goal met on Jan 8th! (Fun!)
go to Craftcation business conference – goal met April 9th (SO GREAT!)
do a wedding event – goal met on Oct 1st! (What a whirlwind!)
kick general ass –……

The belief of no belief system

There is a lot of talk of religion going on in our world/country and how it immediately affects our daily lives, whether you are a believer or not. There are agnostics and atheists involved in conversations with people of secular belief systems over how we live our lives and how laws are applied to our businesses, our movement and even how we educate our children.

There are discussions often driven by an elected “leadership” group that has worked to get placed in these positions of power through *convincing* people that they have the voice that represents them. These leaders now act on the……

Death and rebirth – ideas

The swinging door, the year changing – the frightfully awesome thrill of a new endeavor….

2016 was full of highs and a lot of noteworthy lows. It was not all bad, and we ave come back to this change in the calendar, Time to re-set our auto pilot to sign 2017 (good luck with that).

While negativity is not needed, there is much sarcasm and and a healthily jaded perspective from many of the people that lived their youth in the 80’s. Icons and heroes have left our world and we ask “who do we aspire to now?” I would like to……

Knit Bomb-diggity

I have been posting alot about knit bombing lately.
There are a lot of reasons
1) Free art in the world

we need art
we need to make art
art inspires thought and dialogue

2) unique expression

my art is not going to be like yours
everyone has a different perspective of beauty to share
expanding perspectives by viewing others art is interactive
art can communicate emotions/experiences and spread joy

3) Unlimited opportunity – in particular with the fourth of July coming

Everywhere is an opportunity to make art
US infrastructure provides LOTS of places to install art
4 day weekend – we (yarn bombers everywhere) have TIME to get a bunch of pieces up
making……

Plea to the “allies” in our communities.

To all of the allies out there.

That are loud and “proud” for us queers on social media.
That are shouting love and support from internet rooftops.
I need you to do me a solid.

Along with shouting love and support (I never want to take that for granted) I need you to do something harder. Something that will cause discomfort.
Something that requires intention and directness.
Something that may put you at an emotional risk.
Something that I need you to be strong for.

I need you to engage those around you, in your daily life, and educate, debate, help people that……

Color and Memory

Color is such a notable part of our lives, and we often take for granted how much it triggers our memories. Like smells or music, your brain-pan will file small bits away and as whole days fade away, snippets of moments are captured, in your subconscious, till that color/tone/lighting reminds you of something from your childhood, or your teens, or that time you married….years pass, but there is, like it was just moments ago, in your minds eye.

Along with my own opinions on this based off my own experiences, as someone that is hugely effected by color, there is some science……

Touch . Make . Hope . Future

Do you ever think about how much effort goes into the creation of what you do/wear/use?

I have been struck silly and meditative a few times over last month where I am just reveling in the fact that every item that I make, I am carefully and intentionally handling every single millimeter of fiber that goes into the project in question.

Whether woven or knit or crochet, I handle every single fiber. Often, multiple times. This does not account for the handling needed to create the fiber in the first place. If I am using hand spun fibers, or fibers that have been……

Herstory…

My herstory (vs. history – I am a woman. it is my story – it is my her-story) is long and convoluted. I don’t have the patience, memory, or time to go into ALL of it, but I was pondering while making yesterday. I was warping my loom in the quiet of the morning. The puppies had all eaten and poo’ed and gone back to bed. I was taking notice of the tchotchkes and mementos I keep around the home that have worked their way into my daily life. I was taking notice of the places I have been and how I……

Busy? or Calm? or BOTH?

Busy is good! No stagnation. Object in motion stays in motion, etc. etc etc.

Calm is good! Peacefulness, mindfulness, rest and self care, etc. etc. etc.

Being able to balance the two is GREAT! (I sure don’t think I have gotten even close to mastering that yet… )

I am happily active in a few big things that end up taking up a majority of my time.

One is my day job. I am working for a local, family owned business that is full of sports fans and is focused on quality of work, not personal appearance. This allows me the freedom to be myself……
